Dr. Valentí Fuster

He qualified as a doctor and went on to obtain a PhD degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona. In the 70s he moved to the USA where he worked at Harvard Medical School as a professor. He has worked at top rated hospitals in the USA, like the Mount Sinai Hospital and the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Since 1994, he has held the position of director of the cardiology unit at Mount Sinai Hospital, the most prestigious New York.

He is a General Director of the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) in Madrid. His research covers many topics related to the functioning of the heart. He has published over 400 articles on coronary artery diseases, atherosclerosis and thrombosis. He has a special interest in spreading the knowledge of science in Spain.

In 2006, Dr. Valentin Fuster was named president of the World Association of Cardiology. He is editor of the leading textbooks on cardiology: The Heart and atherothrombosis and Coronary Artery Disease. In 1996 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. It is Doctor Honoris Causa by a number of international universities. He has recently been elected distinguished scientist of the American Heart Association, a merit granted only 15 scientists for their work in cardiovascular research. Dr. Fuster is also editor of a scientific journal specializing in cardiovascular medicine and sponsored by Nature, which began publication in November 2004.

Dr. Jordi Rius

After qualifying as a doctor in Barcelona, Dr. Jordi Rius went to the United States where he completed his specialty training in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. He was appointed Head of Area at Jackson Memorial Hospital and he later worked as a cardiologist at Georgetown Medical Center, Georgetown University, Washington DC.

On his return to Spain, he founded, designed and directed the Coronary Intensive Care Unit at Vall d’Hebron Hospital and Quiron in Barcelona.
