What is it?

It is a noninvasive test that allows real-time imaging of cardiac anatomy. A transducer is placed and moved on the patient chest, producing images of the heart. It displays information about the morphology and function of the heart valves, heart contractility and cardiac chamber size.

What preparation is required?

No special preparation is needed before undergoing echocardiography.

How is the procedure performed?

It is performed with the patient lying on an examination table. The doctor applies a gel on the surface of the chest and moves the transducer. The patient will remain still. It is a painless test with no side effects. The test result is immediate.
